Forgotten Florida: An Engaging Story of the Building of Tallahassee, the Establishment of Key West,

and the Settlement of Sanibel Island 

Clarissa Thomasson received her B.A. in English literature from Duke University and her Master's degree in English Literature from the University of Florida.   She taught English literature, creative writing, and journalism in Montgomery County, Maryland, before moving to Nags Head, North Carolina, with her husband.  There she pursued her writing career and published her first three novels-- Defending Hillsborough, Reconstructing Hillsborough, and Lorinda's Legacy.  In 2000 she and her husband relocated to Venice, Florida, where she published five children's books, called The Little Green Monkey Stories, in 2001.  In 2003 Thomasson published her first book of collected poems, Alone.  Her first Florida historical novel, Florida Shadows, was published in 2007.  The sequel, Florida Secrets, was published in 2009.  The third novel of the trilogy, Florida Sunset, was published in August, 2011.  The stand-alone novel, Surviving Sarasota, was published in April, 2014. Over the Bridge, was published in 2017. Venice Dreamers was published in 2018.

CLARISSA THOMASSON

         Clarissa Thomasson was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She received a BA in English Literature from Duke University and an MA in English from the University of Florida. Thomasson taught English, journalism, and creative writing in Montgomery County, MD, until her retirement.

            Her first two novels, Defending Hillsborough and Reconstructing Hillsborough were chosen by the North Carolina Association of Public School Librarians for use in the high school study of the Civil War. Lorinda’s Legacy was “pick of the month” at Greensboro, NC Barnes and Noble.

            In 2000, Thomasson returned to Florida and now resides in Venice, FL. where she has written five children’s books in her Little Green Monkey series, four novels: Florida Shadows, Florida Secrets, Florida Sunset and Surviving Sarasota set in Southwest Florida, a World War II novel—Over the Bridge—and Venice Dreamers, which highlights Venice’s original settlers. Thomasson’s stage plays, Over the Bridge and Florida Shadows, each won first place in the Clarence “Bud” Jones Playwriting Competition at the Firehouse Theatre in LaBelle, FL, in 2014 and 2015.

            Thomasson is also a freelance writer–having written for GRAND magazine, Yesterday in Florida—where she won a 2005 Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Award for her contributions to Florida history—and Eastside Venice Neighbors—where she wrote monthly articles on Florida history. She is also a contributor to the Venice Gondolier.

            Thomasson’s newest book,  Forgotten Florida, which tells the story of the earliest American settlers on Florida’s west coast, was released September 1, 2022.

Ready for some fireworks? The City of North Port’s annual Freedom Festival, presented by American Irrigation, will kick-off at 5 p.m. on July 4, 2023, at CoolToday Park, 18800 W. Villages Parkway. This family-friendly signature event will include fun activities, great vendors, plenty of food options, and of course, fireworks.

Available on the front event lawn of the stadium will be a children’s activity section which will include a variety of free activities, vendors, lawn games, and much more.  Local food and merchandise vendors are welcome to join in the fun — download a vendor application here.

In addition to the stadium concessions inside the ballpark, there will also be a variety of vendors and community organizations providing informational booths stationed along the concourse. Live music will be performed throughout the night featuring Tim Charron. Seating will be available both inside the stadium or outside on the Event Lawn. If watching the Fireworks Show from the Event Lawn, the public is welcome to bring blankets or chairs to enjoy the show. No personal fireworks, sparklers, animals, or stickers will be permitted. Those who prefer to enjoy the show from home will be able to stream it on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/NorthPortParksAndRec.

Free seating and parking are available on a first come, first serve basis (the public is strongly encouraged to carpool). The high-flying fireworks show by Garden State Fireworks will start at 9 p.m. weather permitting. The display is expected to end around 9:30 p.m.
